Ramapo History Day is the culmination of a week of talks sharing the significant role that Hudson Highland's Ramapo River Pass has played in the founding of this nation and the creation of the Empire State. From the prehistoric travels of Native American tribesmen to the thunderous plus of today's New York State Thruway, the Ramapo River Pass provides the most important, southern, inland gateway through one of the Earth's oldest mountain ranges and into the great State of New York. As a result, the Ramapo Pass has welcomed thousands of travelers over the past 400 years, including Revolutionary War General George Washington and the most famous members of his illustrious command; the notorius outlaw Claudius Smith; pioneers of the American Industrial Revolution; President Willard Fillmore and Secretary of State Daniel Webster aboard the inaugural journey of the historic New York & Erie Railroad; the rich and famous associates of tobacco giant Pierre Lourilard IV, who parlayed his historic Tuxedo Club into the nation's first planned community; and the nation's first African American Supreme Court jurist, Come, celebrate and learn more about one of New York State's key historic corridors at the 1848 mansion of industrialist and philanthropist Jacob Sloat on Saturday, May 19th from 10-5.
